Algorithm Is First to Identify Faces Better Than Humans Can, April 23, 2014

Source: discovermagazine.com

By Carl Engelking

Let’s face it, from trivia to teaching, computers are doing things we thought were uniquely human — and doing them better. Now, facial recognition, a skill humans once dominated, has a new champion. Computer scientists have developed a facial recognition algorithm that, for the first time, outperforms humans’ own abilities.

Facial recognition systems are already better than humans at comparing two images to determine if they are the same person, but only when variables like lighting, pose and expression are controlled. When you shake things up, humans still correctly identify faces with over 97 percent accuracy; before now no other algorithm had come close that mark. However, scientists’ new algorithm, called GaussianFace, performed the feat with an accuracy of 98.52 percent.

Training the Champ
The new algorithm condenses each face it “sees” into a small image to position the eyes, nose, and corners of the mouth in consistent locations. Then, it further divides the image into small, overlapping squares and mathematically charts each square’s unique characteristics, allowing it to compare two images.

Scientists trained the algorithm to look for correct facial features by setting it loose on four massive datasets of face images. Once training was complete, it was time for the main event: Labeled Faces in the Wild (LFW).

LFW is a dataset of 13,000 face images, and is considered the gauntlet for face recognition algorithms. It challenges programs to determine whether a pair of pictures is the same person or different people. However, each photo switches up angles, lighting, makeup and expressions to really test an algorithm’s proficiency.

The GaussianFace algorithm emerged from the test a champion, beating humans’ 97.35 percent average performance on LFW. The algorithm could someday be used in myriad applications including security, image retrieval, and biometric credentials for our computers and mobile devices. The scientists published their findings earlier this month in the online journal arXiv.

NSA Leaks: Mail Tampering, Quantum Computing and Clemency?, January 3, 2014

Source: RT.com

The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court approved the Obama administration's application to renew the bulk collection of telephone metadata for another 90 days on Friday afternoon. The approval will give the administration time to review the 46 recommendations on how to reform the National Security Agency a White House-appointed panel made in December.

Two federal judges have handed down conflicting rulings on the constitutionality of the NSA's bulk metadata collection program in recent weeks, and the Justice Department filed an appeal of one of those rulings - the one that said the program is "likely unconstitutional" - on Friday. Meghan Lopez talks about the latest NSA developments with RT web producer Andrew Blake and political commentator Sam Sacks. -RT.com

Dr. Peter Breggin, Kevin Warwick, David Seaman | Cybernetics/NSA Spying, June 10, 2013

Source: coasttocoastam.com, breggin.com, kevinwarwick.com, davidseamanonline youtube

During the first half-hour, psychiatrist Dr. Peter Breggin reacted to a new study about overconfidence, which finds that people can draw inaccurate conclusions when they underestimate what they don't know. Genuine confidence comes from the ability to think for yourself and solve problems, Breggin commented.

During the first half, Professor of Cybernetics at the University of Reading, England, Kevin Warwick spoke about advances in artificial intelligence, robotics and cyborgs. He defined the concept of a cyborg as a human who is enhanced through technology to have extra abilities. It's an intriguing question to explore-- would you have implants in your eyes if they could give you X-ray vision, or undergo a procedure so you could communicate telepathically?, he pondered. If it was a simple, safe procedure to have small implants installed, many people might consider it, kind of like laser eye surgery, he suggested. Currently, three students have small magnets implanted in their fingers as an experiment into expanding their sensory inputs with sonar, he reported.

Warwick shared details about robots being developed with biological brains using rat neurons, and how research like this is helping people with neurological problems. He touched on his research project involving a robot named Morgui that has five senses-- vision, hearing, infrared, ultrasonics, and radar, and how this data is fused together. He also talked about the Turing test, in which people try to guess whether they are communicating with a human or artificial intelligence. Warwick foresees robotic or autonomous cars coming in the near future, in which drivers might switch into this mode like they do with cruise control when they're on a freeway or toll road.

In the latter half, reporter David Seaman discussed the breaking news about whistleblower Edward Snowden, and the ramification of his disclosures regarding NSA surveillance of American citizens via the Internet and telephone. Glenn Greenwald, the journalist who first received the leaked information, has said that Snowden has given him thousands of documents, many of which are significant stories. "So, it's quite possible that by early next week, you and I could be living in a different kind of world," Seaman remarked, adding that he believes we're seeing a massive abuse of power, and the disassembling of 4th Amendment rights.

Seaman suspects that we have not learned the full extent of the NSA surveillance of American phone calls-- and that in spite of what we've been told, they may actually have transcripts of all conversations. We do know they have logs of all calls over the past seven years, including the numbers you've called, the numbers that have called you, the length of the calls, and the location data, he said. Snowden called this an "existential threat to democracy," and while Pres. Obama and various Senators have defended the surveillance, other Senators have expressed concern. Seaman is particularly galled by Pres. Obama presenting himself to voters as a constitutional law scholar, and now backing these actions. Seaman suggested that the ultimate goal of such surveillance is to prevent or stifle civil unrest.

Micah Hanks is an author, researcher, Fortean, and skeptical inquirer into UFO and anomalous activity. He brings to the conversation a wide scope of ideas and factual data regarding what is called the Singularity. Also known as "trans-humanism", the singularity speculates a near-future transformation of the human into a super intelligent, highly evolved bio-machine via artificial intelligence, biological enhancement,and/or brain-computer interfaces. Singularity was first termed by mathematician, John von Neumann in the 1950s, and popularized by computer scientist and sci-fi writer, Vernor Vinge and inventor/futurist, Ray Kurzweil in his 1999 book, "The Age of Spiritual Machines".

We discuss the origins, aspects, and far-reaching implications of the so-called trans-humanist movement; technology, consciousness, and spirituality, as well as how the singularity may relate to the UFO phenomena that still presents an enigma to present understanding. -Randy Maugans

Dimitar Sasselov, Ben Goertzel | Exoplanets / AI, March 28, 2012

March 28, 2012–Professor of Astronomy at Harvard University, Dimitar Sasselov, discussed the unprecedented breakthroughs in exoplanetary astronomy, and how they will shed new light on our place in the universe. He coined the term "super-Earth," which refers to rocky planets like Earth, only much larger. A number of such exoplanets have been discovered in the last few years, and recently there's been speculation that there could be billions of such super-Earths in our galaxy alone. While the Kepler Mission has excelled at discovering planets, they tend to be too far from Earth to adequately study their atmospheres and surfaces, he noted. So the next big step will be to discover planets that are closer to us and to look for signatures of life, he continued, adding that there's a proposal for a survey satellite called TESS which could locate planetary targets amongst the nearest stars for detailed viewing by the James Webb telescope (the successor to Hubble). Sasselov also talked about the transit of Venus on June 5th, the only time this planet will be seen moving between the Earth and the Sun this century.

During the last hour, Dr. Brian Goertzel spoke about his work on artificial intelligence (AI) and its various applications. AI machines will excel in deciphering our modern economy and coming up with solutions, in a way that humans weren't evolved to do, he commented. Robot/AI nannies and housekeepers may be among the first machines people will have in their homes, he said, though the military could also use the technology to develop super soldiers. Goertzel, who moved to Hong Kong to work on AI projects, also talked about the "technological singularity," which he described as a point in time "when the progress of science and technology becomes so rapid that from the point of view of the human mind, it's essentially infinite." Inventor and futurist Ray Kurzweil has predicted that this transformative point could occur by 2045.

NSA Building A $2 Billion Quantum Computer Artificial Intelligence Spy Center, March 18, 2012

Source: blog.alexanderhiggins.com

The NSA is a data center to house a 512 qubit quantum computer capable of learning, reproducing the brain’s cognitive functions, and programming itself.

The National Security Center is building a highly fortified $2 Billion highly top secret complex simply named the “Utah Data Center” which will soon be home to the Hydrogen bomb of cybersecurity – A 512 Qubit Quantum Computer — which will revitalize the “total information awareness” program originally envisioned by George Bush in 2003.

The news of the data center comes after Department of Defense contractor Lockheed Martin secured a contract with D-Wave for $10 million for a 512 qubit Quantum Computer code-named Vesuvius.

Vesuvius is capable of executing a massive number of computations at once, more than 100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,00 0, which is would take millions of years on a standard desktop.

The computer will be able to crack crack even the most secure encryption and will give the US government a quantum leap into technologies once only dreamed of including the rise of the world’s very first all-knowing omniscient self-teaching artificial intelligence.

The D-Wave Quantum computer boasts of a wide array of features including:

Binary classification – Enables the quantum computer to be fed vast amounts of complex input data, including text, images, and videos and label the material
Quantum Unsupervised Feature Learning QUFL – Enables the computer to learn on its own, as well as create and optimize its own programs to make itself run more efficiently.
Temporal QUFL – Enables the Computer to predict the future based in information it learns through Binary classification and the QUFL feature.
Artificial Intelligence Via Quantum Neural Network – Enables the computer to completely reconstruct the human brain’s cognitive processes and teach itself how to make better decisions and better predict the future based.

Humanity Must 'Jail' Dangerous AI to Avoid Doom, Expert Says Super-intelligent computers or robots have threatened humanity's existence more than once in science fiction. Such doomsday scenarios could be prevented if humans can create a virtual prison to contain artificial intelligence before it grows dangerously self-aware.

Keeping the artificial intelligence (AI) genie trapped in the proverbial bottle could turn an apocalyptic threat into a powerful oracle that solves humanity's problems, said Roman Yampolskiy, a computer scientist at the University of Louisville in Kentucky. But successful containment requires careful planning so that a clever AI cannot simply threaten, bribe, seduce or hack its way to freedom.

"It can discover new attack pathways, launch sophisticated social-engineering attacks and re-use existing hardware components in unforeseen ways," Yampolskiy said. "Such software is not limited to infecting computers and networks — it can also attack human psyches, bribe, blackmail and brainwash those who come in contact with it."
